The Scorch Trials jatkaa siitä mihin The Maze Runner jäi. Thomas ja kumppanit eivät olekaan turvassa, vaan heillä on uusi koetus edellä. Pakkaa sekotetaan paljastamalla, että he eivät olleetkaan ainoa ryhmä joiden täytyi selviytyä sokkelosta. 

Thomasin ja kumppaneilla on vain yksi vaihtoehto: ehtiä perille kahdessa viikossa. Tällöin he saavat parannuksen sairauteen, joka heihin kaikkiin on tartutettu. Pitkä matka alkaa, mutta kirjan lyhyyden vuoksi se tuntuu yllättävän... lyhyeltä.

The Scorch Trials on tyypillinen trilogia keskiosa. Siinä ei tapahdu mitään varsinaista yllättävää, se ei ole kovinkaan mieleenpainuva ja luultavasti harvan suosikkiosa. Muutamia uusia hahmoa edetellään. Vanhat hahmot kasvavat sen minkä voivat. Siinä ei ole varsinaista huipennusta, millainen on pakosti ensimmäisessä ja viimeisessä osassa. Loppujen lopuksi The Scorch Trials on pakollinen liima, joka yhdistää The Maze Runnerin ja The Death Curen.

The Scorch Trials koostuu lähinnä Thomasin pyrkimyksistä päästä turvapaikkaan. Jälleen tulee huomattua, kuinka ärsyttävän kätevä Thomas on hahmona. Hän potee vieläkin muistinmenetystä, vaikka menneisyys alkaa palata hänelle pala palalta. Hän kuitenkin tuntuu olleen yksi keskeisimmistä hahmosta kokeiden suhteen. Thomas ei ole ryhmän varsinainen johtaja, mutta hän käyttäytyy kuin johtaja. Thomasin oikea tehtävä on tulla tapetuksi - mutta sitä ei tapahdukaan, ja hän pelastuu. The Scorch Trials jättää vielä paljon aukkoja Dashnerin dystopiseen maailmaan, vaikka kokonaiskuva alkaakin piirtyä. Jäin toivomaan, että maailmaa olisi jaksettu syventää ja enemmän mysteereitä olisi paljastunut. Nyt kaikki jännite on pakkautunut viimeisen osan kohdalle. Toisaalta se voi tehdä siitä varsin vaikuttavan. 

Ideana kaikki toimii. Kaikki on jännittävää ja kaikesta haluaa lukea, mutta hahmot ovat kovin onttoja. Ja miksi tähänkin oli pakko kirjoittaa väkisin romantiikkaa? Eivätkö Thomas ja Teresa voineet olla vaan ystäviä? Mielestäni heidän suhteensa toimi erinomaisesti ja uniikisti nimenomaan ystävyyssuhteena. Romanttiset tunteet tekevät suhteesta yhtäkkiä kamalan tavanomaisen. Toisaalta, onhan Thomas vain teinipoika, ja kiinnostuihan hän hieman uudesta uudesta tytöstä. 

Voin sanoa, että pidin The Scorch Trialsista, mutta olen lukenut paljon paremminkin kirjoitettuja keskiosia, että The Scorch Trials valitettavasti kalpenee ja jää vain yhdistäväksi sillaksi, vielä melko heikoksi sellaiseksi.

"I think I know," Aris said, so quietly Thomas wasn't sure he'd heard him correctly.

"Huh?"

"I think I know. Why there were two groups. Are two groups."

Thomas looked over at him, could barely see the surprising look of calm on his face. "You do? What then?"

Aris still didn't seem very winded. "Well, actually I have two ideas. One is I think these people - WICKED, whoever they are - are trying to weed out the best of both groups to use us somehow. Maybe even breed us or something like that."

"What?" Thomas was so surprised he almost forgot about the screaming. He couldn't believe anyone would be so sick. "Breed us? Come on."

"After going through the Maze and what we just saw happen in that tunnel, you think breeding is far-fetched? Give me a break."

"Good that." Thomas had to admit that the kid had a point. "Okay, so what was your other theory?" As he asked it Thomas could feel the weariness brought on by the run settling in; his throat felt like someone had poured a glassful of sand down his gullet.

"Kind of the opposite," Aris responded. "That instead of wanting survivor from both groups, they want one group to live through to the end. So they're either weeding out people from the guys and the girls, or an entire group altogether. Either way, it's the only explanation I can think of."
