A Song of Ice and Fire (suom. Tulen ja jään laulu) on ainakin tämänhetkinen lempikirjasarjani. George R. R. Martin on luonut niin tarkan ja mielenkiintoisen maailman, että siihen lumoutuu. Olen lukenut nyt koko sarjan, mutta A Storm of Swords, sarjan kolmas osa oli jäänyt minulta aikaisemmin tänä vuonna kesken, joten aloitin sen nyt alusta ja luin loppuun. Kahteen osaan jaettu kirja tuntui kestävän ikuisuuden, mutta hyvällä tavalla. Mitä pidempi, sen parempi. Kirjaa kerrottiin kymmennen eri hahmon näkökulmasta (jos prologi- ja epiloginäkökulmia ei lasketa) ja jokaisella hahmolla on oma juonensa. Siis juonikaaria oli yhteensä kymmenen, ja seuraavissa osissa yhä enemmän. Juonet ja hahmot olivat kuitenkin kytköksissä toisiinsa.

Tulen ja jään laulua on ehkä vaikea lukea, jollei keskity ja ole aidon kiinnostunut kaikesta. Itse sarjaa aloittaessani ongelmani olikin vähäinen kiinnostus joihinkin tapahtumiin ja hahmoihin ja kärryiltä putosi nopeasti. Kirjat pitävät sisällään niin paljon salaisia teorioita ja pieniä huomautuksia ja maailmaan omaa historiaa, että lukukokemuksesta saa enemmän irti jos sarjaan perehtyy kunnolta. Itselleni innon sarjaan toi omilta osin TV-sarja Game of Thrones, joka kalpenee huomattavasti kirjojen rinnalla oikoteineen ja myöhemmillä kausilla huomattavan isoine muutoksineen.

A Storm of Swords on kirjana hajanaisempi kuin kaksi edellistä, A Game of Thrones sekä A Clash of Kings. Näkökulmahahmot ovat suurrimilta osin erossa toisistaan, eri puolilla maanosaa. Heitä kuitenkin yhdistää sota ja kuolema. Hahmoja sarjassa kuolee runsaasti, mutta ei ehkä niin liioitellusti kuin maine kertoo. Tai ehkä se riippuu siitä, millaisia kirjoja on aikaisemmin lukenut. Edes näkökulmahahmot eivät ole turvassa. A Storm of Swords on täynnä raivostuttaviakin juonenkäänteitä, jotka ovat samalla nerokkaita ja pitävä kiinnostuksen yllä. Rakastan sitä, että ei voi ennalta arvata mitä tulee tapahtumaan! Toisaalta, kiitos TV-sarjan ja oman urkkimiseni, tiesin kaikki tapahtumat etukäteen. Silti ne jännittivät. A Storm of Swords on paljon tapahtumarikkaampi kuin esimerkiksi A Clash of Kings, jossa saattoi olla kokonaisia kappaleita joissa ei oikeastaan tapahtunut yhtään mitään. Tällaisia saattoi olla ainakin A Storm of Swordsin alkupuolella mutta varsinkin kirjan toisessa osassa jokainen kappale oli toimintarikas.Viiimeiset kappaleet loppuivat cliffhangereihin.

Olen jo pitkään todennut, ettei minulla ole tässä sarjassa varsinaista lempihahmoa. On hahmoja joista pidän kovasti ja hahmoja joista en pidä lainkaan. Kiinnyn helposti jopa hahmoihin, joilla ei ole isoa roolia saatika paljon repliikkejä. Useimmiten saatan pitää hahmon tarjoamasta näkökulmasta ja juonesta enemmän kuin itse hahmosta. Pidin tässä kirjassa eniten Catelynin sekä Aryan näkökulmista, Aryan juonesta ja ainakin näkökulmana vähiten Davosista. Pidin myös siitä, että kirjassa saattaa kuulua satoja sivuja ennen kuin saamme lisää tietoa näkökulmahahmon kohtalosta. Se pitää jännityksen yllä. Tässä kirjassa ei mielestäni kenenkään hahmon näkökulma ollut turha, mutta kahdessa seuraavassa osassa on valitettavasti pari sellaista.

A Storm of Swords oli ehdottomasti erittäin hyvä kirja, vaikka mieltymykseni saattaa johtua siitä että olen aivan tämän sarjan lumoissa. Kirjasarjan lukeminen englanniksi on ollut paras päätökseni ikinä. Tekstissä on aluksi omat hankaluutensa, varsinkin kun Martin käyttää erikoisempia muotoja ja ihan omia sanoja osana maailmaa, mutta tekstiin totuttua hieman yksinkertaisempaa suomenkielistä tekstiä on ollut omituista lukea heti Tulen ja jään laulun jälkeen. Olen oppinut paljon sanastoa ja hieman monimutkaisemman englannin lukeminen on tuntunut sujuvan paremmin tämän jälkeen. A Storm of Swords ei tapahtumarikkaudestaan huolimatta päässyt suosikikseni tästä sarjasta. Ehkä sijoittaisin sen kolmanneksi. A Feast for Crowsin ja A Game of Thronesin jälkeen.

Lothar bowed, kissed the queen's hand, and withdrew. By then a dozen others had gathered for a word. Robb spoke with them each, giving a thanks here, a smile there, as needed. Only when the ast of them was done did he turn back to Catelyn. "There is something we must speak of. Will you walk with me?"

"As you command, Your Grace."

"That wasn't a command, Mother."

"It will be my pleasure, then." Her son had treated her kindly enough since returning to Riverrun, yet he seldon sought her out. If he was more comfortable with his young queen, she could scarcely blame him. Jeyne makes him smile, and I have nothing to share with him but grief. He seemed to enjoy the company of his bride's brothers, as well; young Rollam his squire and Ser Raynald his standard-bearer. They are standing in the boots of those he's lost, Catelyn realized when she watched them together. Rollam has taken Bran's place, and Raynald is part Theon and part Jon Snow. Only with the Westerlings did she see Robb smile, or hear him laugh like the boy he was. To the others he was always the King in the North, head bowed beneath the weight of the crown even when his brows were bare.

The arrow made a soft hiss as it left his string. A moment later there was a grunt, and suddenly only two shadows were loping across the yard. They ran all faster, but Jon had already pulled a second arrow from his quiver. This time he hurried the shot too much, and missed. The wildlings were gone by the time he nocked again. He searched for another target, and found four, rushing around the empty shell of the Lord Commander's Keep. The moonlight glimmered off their spears and axes, and the gruesome devices on their round leathern shields; skulls and bones, serpents, bear claws, twisted demonic faces. Free folk, he knew. The Thenns carried shields of black boiled leather with bronze rims and bosses, but theirs were plain and unadorned. These were lighter wicker shields of raiders.

Jon pulled the goose feather back to his ear, aimed, and loosed the arrow, the nocked and drew and loosed again. The first shaft pierced the bearclaw shield, the second one a throat. The wildling screamed as he went down. He heard the deep thrum of Deaf Dick's crossbow to his left, and Satin's a moment later. "I got one!" the boy cried hoarsely. "I got one in the chest."

"Get another," Jon called.

He did not have to search for targets now; only choose them.
